Crystal Shell: more than an EV charger cover

Crystal Shell is more than a small rain hood above a wall box. It is an outdoor EV charger cover that protects both the top and the front while leaving the sides open for cable access, controls and servicing.

The idea

Protect the surfaces most exposed to sun, UV, driving rain, hail and dirt without turning the charger into a closed cabinet.

Why a simple rain hood has limits

A roof mainly protects against weather falling vertically. In real outdoor installations, low sun, wind-driven rain and hail often hit the charger from the front.

Crystal Shell therefore combines an upper shield with a transparent front barrier.

What exposure does it reduce?

  • Direct sun: less solar radiation on the top and fascia.
  • UV exposure: reduced direct exposure of plastics, markings and transparent parts.
  • Hail: a barrier in front of display, LEDs and visible surfaces.
  • Driving rain: reduced direct impact on the front of the charger.
  • Tree sap, leaves and bird mess: less direct contamination.
  • Pollen and dust: an easier-to-maintain charging area.

Why the sides are left open

A home charger must remain easy to use. The cable should move freely, the socket and controls must remain accessible and maintenance should not require dismantling a sealed enclosure.

This places Crystal Shell between a basic rain hood and a fully enclosed cabinet: a protective cover that keeps the original charger visible.

The VoltaCover surface-temperature comparison

In a VoltaCover comparison test, the measured surface temperature of the charger protected by Crystal Shell was approximately 10–15°C lower than the directly exposed surface under the specific test conditions.

Important context

This is a surface-temperature comparison. It is not the air temperature or the internal electronics temperature, and the same reduction is not guaranteed in every installation.

Protecting screens, LED rings and plastics

Modern EV chargers often feature prominent LED rings, displays and glossy or transparent fascias. A front shield can reduce direct sun, driving rain and impact on these visible components.

Protection without hiding the charger

Many home chargers are installed beside an entrance, garage or driveway where appearance matters. Owners may not want to hide a premium charger inside a metal cabinet.

Crystal Shell keeps the charger visible and recognisable while making the charging area look more protected and organised.

What Crystal Shell does not do

  • it does not change the charger’s IP rating;
  • it does not make an indoor-only charger suitable for outdoor use;
  • it does not replace a compliant electrical installation;
  • it does not actively cool the charger;
  • it cannot guarantee complete protection in every extreme hail event;
  • it does not remove the need for inspection and cleaning;
  • it must not interfere with manufacturer clearances or openings.

UK installation note

An external cover does not replace a compliant EV chargepoint installation. The charger must remain suitable for its location and be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable electrical requirements. UK government chargepoint specifications reference BS EN 61851, BS 7671 and the IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installations. Any required clearances, cable routes and access must remain unchanged.

Where is it particularly useful?

  • south- or west-facing external walls;
  • black or anthracite EV chargers;
  • open driveways without deep shelter;
  • carports exposed from the sides;
  • pedestal-mounted chargers;
  • visible residential or workplace charging areas.

Check compatibility before fitting

The charger dimensions, cable exit, socket position, mounting height and available clearance need to be checked. A protective cover must preserve normal use and service access.

The charger stays visible and accessible, but it is no longer completely exposed.
