Can hail damage an EV charger? Risks and protection

An EV charger designed for outdoor use may be well protected against water and dust, yet hail introduces a different type of risk: mechanical impact. During a severe storm, hailstones driven by wind can hit the display, LED ring, plastic fascia, socket flap and other exposed parts directly.

The key point

An IP rating and hail protection are not the same thing. An outdoor-rated charger can still have front-facing components that are vulnerable to impact.

Can hail actually damage an EV charger?

Yes, particularly in severe thunderstorms with larger hailstones and strong gusts. Many chargers will come through ordinary hail showers without visible damage, but risk increases when the unit is fully exposed on an outside wall, mounted on a pedestal or installed beside an open driveway with no substantial shelter.

The outcome depends on hailstone size and density, wind speed, impact angle, duration of the storm and the materials used on the charger. A charger under a carport may be protected from vertical impact while still receiving wind-driven hail across the front.

Which parts are most exposed?

  • Displays and transparent windows, which can crack, chip or become cloudy.
  • LED rings and light bars, often located behind plastic diffusers.
  • Socket flaps and connectors, particularly where they project from the enclosure.
  • Glossy or transparent fascias, where marks and impact damage are immediately visible.
  • Cable holders and side-mounted accessories, which can be reached by angled hail.

Why an IP rating does not tell you everything

The IP rating describes protection against ingress of solid objects and water. It does not automatically state how well a display window, LED diffuser or decorative fascia will withstand repeated impacts.

Weather-resistant does not automatically mean impact-resistant.

Mechanical resistance depends on the design, material thickness and construction of the charger. It is therefore unsafe to assume that a high IP rating is also a blanket hail guarantee.

What to check after a hailstorm

Inspect the charger visually without dismantling it. Look for cracks, loose covers, damaged socket flaps, unusual condensation, display problems or changes to the charging cable.

If the enclosure is cracked or there is any doubt about electrical safety, stop using the charger and contact the manufacturer, installer or a qualified electrician rather than applying improvised sealants or repairs.

Why a small roof is not always enough

A simple rain hood mainly protects from above. In gusty weather, hail can arrive at a shallow angle and strike the front of the charger. That is where a front shield becomes useful for protecting the display, LEDs and plastics.

How Crystal Shell works

UK installation note

An external cover does not replace a compliant EV chargepoint installation. The charger must remain suitable for its location and be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable electrical requirements. UK government chargepoint specifications reference BS EN 61851, BS 7671 and the IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installations. Any required clearances, cable routes and access must remain unchanged.
