Where should an outdoor EV charger be installed?

The position of an outdoor EV charger affects everyday convenience, cable routing, maintenance and exposure to sun, rain and hail. In UK homes, common locations include a garage wall, carport, exterior house wall, private driveway or a freestanding post beside an off-street parking space.

The right order

Start with the manufacturer’s installation requirements

Every charger has requirements for mounting height, temperature range, clearances, fixing and cable entry. These requirements take priority over cosmetic considerations.

A cover comes later: it complements a correctly selected and correctly installed charger. It cannot fix an unsuitable electrical installation or mounting position.

Garage, carport or open driveway?

Garage

A garage reduces exposure to sun, hail and driving rain. The charger still needs to be accessible, correctly ventilated where required and positioned so the cable reaches the vehicle easily.

Carport

A carport offers useful overhead shelter but may still allow low sun, side-driven rain and hail to reach the front of the charger.

Open driveway or off-street parking

This is usually the most exposed arrangement. The charger needs a suitable wall or pedestal, sensible impact protection and a cable route that does not create a trip hazard.

South- and west-facing walls

These orientations can receive strong direct sun, particularly in the afternoon. A dark charger mounted on a dark wall may experience significant surface heating even in the UK climate.

Think about the vehicle’s charge port

Charge-port position varies by vehicle. The cable should reach without excessive tension and should not routinely cross a gate, pavement, shared route or other area where it can become an obstacle.

Avoid drainage and direct water jets

An outdoor-rated charger should not be deliberately positioned in a flood-prone area, beneath uncontrolled roof drainage or where sprinklers and pressure washing repeatedly target the unit.

Protect against accidental impact

On a driveway, chargers may be hit by car doors, bicycles, bins, garden equipment or vehicles manoeuvring. Freestanding units may need suitable physical protection depending on the location.

Keep maintenance access clear

The display, socket, cable, covers and required service areas need to remain accessible. An external cover must not reduce manufacturer clearances or obstruct access.

UK installation note

An external cover does not replace a compliant EV chargepoint installation. The charger must remain suitable for its location and be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable electrical requirements. UK government chargepoint specifications reference BS EN 61851, BS 7671 and the IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installations. Any required clearances, cable routes and access must remain unchanged.
