The display, LED ring, transparent inserts and controls are usually positioned on the front of an EV charger. That makes the fascia the part most directly exposed to sun, UV, wind-driven rain, hail and everyday dirt.
Why the front matters
A charger can work perfectly yet look prematurely aged if its screen is marked, its clear plastics become cloudy or the fascia loses its finish.
Why displays and LEDs are so exposed
Status lights and screens must be visible, so they cannot be hidden behind the unit. On a driveway or outside wall, the front surface receives direct sunlight and airborne dirt day after day.
Direct sunlight and readability
Strong sunlight can reduce display contrast and make LED status colours harder to distinguish. Creating shade over the fascia can improve readability in some conditions without changing the charger itself.
UV exposure and plastic ageing
- Black plastics may become dull or lose uniformity.
- White surfaces can show yellowing or dirt more clearly.
- Clear inserts may gradually lose transparency.
- Glossy fascias make fine scratches and water marks more visible.
- Printed logos and symbols may lose contrast over time.
Pollen, tree sap, dust and bird mess
Many home chargers are installed beside gardens, hedges or trees. Pollen, sap, leaves, insects and bird mess can stick to the front, particularly when the surface is heated by the sun.
A top and front cover reduces direct deposits but does not eliminate routine cleaning.
Cleaning without damaging the charger
Always follow the charger manufacturer’s instructions. Aggressive solvents, abrasive pads and pressure washing should not be treated as default cleaning methods.
A soft cloth and a gentle approved method are generally more appropriate, with care not to force liquid into the socket, joints or cable entry points.
Displays and LEDs during hail
Transparent display windows and LED diffusers can be more vulnerable to impact than the main body of the charger. Wind-driven hail may strike them directly.

UK installation note
An external cover does not replace a compliant EV chargepoint installation. The charger must remain suitable for its location and be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable electrical requirements. UK government chargepoint specifications reference BS EN 61851, BS 7671 and the IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installations. Any required clearances, cable routes and access must remain unchanged.
