An IP rating is essential when choosing an EV charger for outdoor installation, but it does not describe every effect of sun, UV exposure, heat, hail or long-term weathering. This distinction matters when a wall box is installed on an exposed house wall, garage, carport or driveway.
The correct distinction
The IP rating belongs to the charger enclosure. An external EV charger cover can reduce direct weather exposure, but it does not change the charger’s certification or manufacturer rating.
What does the IP rating mean?
The two digits after IP describe protection against solid objects and water ingress. For an outdoor EV charger, this is a fundamental specification and should always be checked against the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
The required rating and permitted installation conditions depend on the product and location. A cover cannot turn an indoor-only charger into a charger approved for outdoor use.
What an IP rating does not tell you
- how hot a dark fascia may become in direct sun;
- how quickly plastics or finishes may age under UV exposure;
- whether a display or LED diffuser is resistant to severe hail;
- how much pollen, tree sap, dust or bird mess may collect on the unit;
- whether a display remains easy to read in strong sunlight;
- how the appearance may change after years of exposure.
IP rating and sun protection are different issues
A charger can be well sealed against rain and still become very hot in direct sunlight. Air temperature, surface temperature and the temperature of internal electronics are three different measurements.
A sun cover shades the top and front of the charger. It does not replace the charger’s own thermal management, but it reduces an important external source of heat: direct solar radiation.
IP rating and UV exposure
UV radiation acts on plastics, coatings, transparent inserts and printed markings over time. Depending on material quality, orientation and exposure, surfaces may fade, dull or lose transparency.
IP rating and hail
Hail is a mechanical impact. Good water ingress protection does not automatically mean that a display window, light diffuser or plastic flap will tolerate every hail event without damage.
Does an EV charger cover improve the IP rating?
No. The original IP rating remains exactly as declared by the charger manufacturer. Crystal Shell is a separate protective structure and does not alter the electrical certification of the wall box.
An EV charger cover complements outdoor suitability; it never replaces it.
When extra weather protection is especially useful
- a south- or west-facing external wall;
- a black or anthracite charger in full sun;
- an open driveway with little shelter;
- a location exposed to heavy rain or hail;
- a charger installed beneath trees;
- a premium charger with a visible screen, LED ring or glossy fascia.
Why open sides matter
A cover must not obstruct manufacturer clearances, vents, cable routing or maintenance access. Improvised fully enclosed boxes can alter the thermal conditions around the charger.

UK installation note
An external cover does not replace a compliant EV chargepoint installation. The charger must remain suitable for its location and be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable electrical requirements. UK government chargepoint specifications reference BS EN 61851, BS 7671 and the IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installations. Any required clearances, cable routes and access must remain unchanged.
